The Wortham name and the region of Wortham Bend represent a deep layer of history in McLennan County, Texas. This land, situated on a dramatic curve of the mighty Brazos River, was a prime location for both Indigenous cultures and 19th-century American settlers like the Worthams.
The family put down roots in the 1850s and 1860s, establishing a homestead prized for its rich, agricultural bottomlands. The name became a permanent fixture, etched into local landmarks like Wortham Bend Road and the Wortham Bend Cemetery. This history is rooted in the early American pioneer spirit and is further layered by the thousands of years of Indigenous presence, evidenced by the arrowheads and artifacts frequently discovered along the Brazos Riverbanks.
A New Chapter of Stewardship (1990s - Present)
Since the early 1990s, this original homestead has been lovingly cared for by the Wilsons and Gabriels, descendants and relatives of the original Worthams, ensuring the legacy continues. This marked the beginning of intensive, generational stewardship, focused on preservation and improvement. We spent countless weekends cleaning up, improving roads, and dedicating ourselves to preserving the farm’s irreplaceable history.
The farm is truly a place where history meets happiness. Countless summers were spent in the river, fishing, swimming, and sharing the tranquil beauty of the Brazos with friends. Today, we are proud to see the third generation of our current families enjoying the farm, making this the sixth generation to share life's most precious moments here.
Preserving for the Future
Our commitment to the farm's future is absolute. In 2018, the original farmhouse, built in the 1950s, underwent a complete, down-to-the-studs renovation to modernize the structure while retaining its historical integrity. To accommodate our increasing family size, a new cabin was also added.
We honor Jack Wortham, our beloved grandfather, who ensured the farm was preserved and passed down for us to enjoy and share. The history of Wortham Bend is a powerful narrative—woven from the ancient past, the pioneer spirit, and the enduring commitment of our family.
